DESCRIPTION
By the end of 1917, the Allied air forces had control of the skies on the Western Front, thanks to their new SPAD S.VII, Sopwith Camel and other S.E.5 and S.E.5a fighters… The German government then issued a call for tenders for an improved single-seat fighter. In January 1918, a demonstration involving 31 new aircraft took place at Berlin-Adlershof. Fokker lined up the V11 prototype with a 160 hp Mercedes engine (it became the Fokker D.VII) and the V22 prototype with a 185 hp BMW IIIa engine (it became the Fokker D.VIIF), which were both selected and appeared on the front in April and May 1918 respectively.
The plans were drawn up by Reinhold Platz, the head of the Fokker factory design office. The Fokker workshops manufactured 877 of these aircraft, the Albatros company was also called upon to produce 1,749 from its workshops in Berlin-Johannisthal and Schneidemühl.
